Default buying a used blower tips

going to check out a used S-trim plus some other parts and was wondering if anybody had any tips for checking these things out. The guy claims it hasnt had much run time and it comes with all the things needed for the install plus some. Seems like a good deal.

the only thing i have ever read was checking to make sure there was no play in the impellor...

Thanks for any and all...

i bought a used s trim the impeller was tight, but when I installed it oil was getting by the seals and into the intake pipe, had to send in to vortech to get new case and rebuild which was around 800 bucks. Not really sure how to spot that with out having it installed

check the impeller and see if you can see any oil residue where the cases come together and inside the discharge side

Check for oil inside the housing and look at the out side around the shaft. look at the inside of the compressor housing for nicks and sharp spots. that is a sign it ate something or try to look at the compressor wheel the best you can or take off the housing if he will let you and look at the wheel close once again to see if it passed any thing hard. then like you said check it for play side to side and end play there should be none. spin the shaft and check for tight spots also there should be none.

I've seen WAY too many people get burned on FI setups, many of which know what they're doing. I'd suggest you think about this real hard if you're unfamiliar with what to expect, because you could end up spending more overall after doing costly repairs. I'm not against used stuff, but be careful here. There's a ton of things that could go wrong, even in the event things LOOK ok.

check for impeller play (side to side and forward and back), look for signs of the impeller hitting the compressor housing. check the pulley for play (side to side and forward and back) the pulley should have some forward and back play (mine did brand new from vortech). also stick your fingers into the impeller and hold it in place, while doing that try to spin the pulley, should be little to no movement.

and like others have said, check for signs of oil leaking but that can be really hard

lastly, take a good look at the outside for signs of misuse such as scratches or chips off the chrome (if chrome). this type of stuff will tell you if the guy cared enough about the sc to handle it correctly. if he cared for the outside he probably maintained it well

I did the used thing and got lucky. I know my stuff is obsolete but, worry about getting ripped next time if I did sell the parts. It is a gamble especially if you can't see it first.
