Default Starter heLp..!!

I've tried searching this subject but I don't seem to find anything with the sypmtoms I'm having. So I just finished purchasing an 89 coupe. So for the first couple of days it would start up fine but just recently I'm having starter trouble. I will go to start it and it starts but the starter will get stuck on the on position for maybe 10 or 20 seconds and then it will disengage while the car is running. I noticed the battey amp gauge will stay below half until the starter decides to disengage. So is this a symptom of a bad solenoid?

I mistakenly put this in the wrong section. Can it be moved to the tech section. Thank you

Could be a stuck relay or solenoid. The contacts may be sticking causing the starter to stay running. One day it may stay stuck. Replace both if you want good insurance.

You may be able to test them by running a cable from the battery to the starter bypassing the relay and see if it works but I wouldnt do that and leave it. If it still does it then its the solenoid if not relay.

What relay are you referring to in particular and where can I find it?

Use 12v test light and while someone cranks car check voltage on small wire at starter solenoid. Unplug coil to prevent starter-flywheel damage.Keeps cranking after light goes out it is solenoid. Assistant should let you know when turn key back. Keeps on after key turned back replace ignition switch.

The starter relay on the driver's fender apron next to the ignition coil.
