Default Questions on building a street 347 with an AOD

Questions on building a street 347 for my recently acquired 93 AOD Coupe. This car will be 99% street 1% track. We have a local 1/8 mile track that I might visit once a year at most.

I believe that I would like to get a set of 185 Twisted wedge heads from Fox Lake. Fox Lake offers a 175 cc head would anyone recommend this over the 185? It seems that most recommend a 185 cc head for 331s and 347s.

I have read in several places that a stroker motor moves the rpm range of intakes and cams down. If I were building a 306 I would pick a cam and intake with a street operating range like the Trickflow Street Heat intake Idle-5,500 rpm range or the Edelbrock Performer Idle-5,500 rpm range. From what I have read putting these on a stroker motor will move the power band down 500 to 700 rpm. Is this correct or is the listed rpm still valid even with the increased displacment? Would I be better served with the Trickflow Track Heat or the Edelbrock Performer RPM II both rated 1500-6500 because the larger displacement of the 347 will bring the range down to a more streetable level of 1000\1200-5800\6000. The car will probably never see 6000. The same question on selecting a cam. Would I pick a cam that would be a little too much if I were running a 306 but the 347 would tame it down and make it a street cam?

A good setup for me would pull from Idle-5500 with a 347.
Also for the auto would a Street Fighter from TCI Expected RPM Stall Speeds: Small Block: 3000 to 3400 be too much or would I be better served with a Saturday Night special Expected RPM Stall Speeds: Small Block: 1600 to 1800. I know that the stall speed for each will be less with a lighter car and coupes are supposed to be relatively light. Also I already have 373s in the rear.

I turn my 306 easily close to 6500, cam powerband was set up so it could turn close to 6300 is and I run a rpm II intake, a properly built 347 and you'd be wise to run a shorter runner intake, such as a victor efi or a victor jr with a 90 degree elbow

Would the RPM II range still be over 6000 even on a 347. I just don’t see turning the engine that high on a regular basis. I was thinking that if an intake had a 6500 upper range on a 302\306 it would be brought down to something more like 5800\6000 range on a 347.

You mentioned the victor or victor jr. Would these not be way too big for a daily driver street car with an AOD. I just don’t see the car ever hitting 6000 rpm on any regular basis.

if you don't want to spin it past 6k have a cam and valvetrain set up for such, but realize you will leave some potential on the table, I like custom cams as they can be taylored to what I want

the stocker will be better than the 1600-1800 one from tci, and the street fighter will like a 2200 from anyone who makes good converters.

look at lentech and precision industries. if you buy a converter for $300 you will be replacing it in a year

i also recommend lentech for a new trans too if you have to keep it auto, but i'd do a 5-speed swap and gain the 100 hp back you lost

Thanks for the suggestions. I have plenty of other stuff to do first before the engine and trans that is the stuff that is the most fun to plan\dream. I know a 5 speed would be fun but I just don’t know about doing a swap. The auto does not really bother me now because the car is so slow anyway. It will barely bark the tires with 373s in the rear. LOL The car seems to be reliably so I will probably just drive it for now and fix some of the low cost interior suff while planning \ saving for the major stuff.

OP, I think you thoroughly mis-understood what people mean by "it changes the operational RPM range"

If a intake has an operational range of idle to 5500 rpms, it means that its peak efficientcy is within those ranges.

Your car will pull XXXcfm of air at 5000 rpm, with the OEM 302
your car will move the same XXXcfm of air at a considerably lower RPM once you increase your displacement and compression ratio.

That being said, a idle-5500rpm capable 302 intake manifold, may only be effective on a high compression 347 for idle to 4000rpm.

Just remember, 302 parts make 302 power. Putting small parts on a big engine... makes small power.

build it right, research here, and not in magazines... and take your advice from the "experienced" crowd
