Default oil consumption

ok, so i went to my old college this weekend, and when i left my buddys house i cranked up the car and the oil light was on, checked oil and it needed about 1qt. car had no puddles or anything, underneath, and its been sitting since friday evening... so what should i check first? bad pcv valve? how would i know its bad? or at 152k should i just expect it to need a quart every 3,000 miles? changing the oil this week as its due, cars not smoking at all, so its not burning alot if it is...

Short trips in town then a extended drive of several hours. Then oil level stays same on return trip? Years ago Ford TSB went something like this... Short trips and several thousand miles on oil chane then a road trip of couple hundred miles and quart of oil is gone. Return trip no oil consumption. WTH? Moisture in crankcase from short trips got burned out during trip. Weird thing but that is what engineering department came up with. Don't know if this fits what happened. If so drive more or more frequent o&f changes.
