Default 1993 Cobra, rough idle

I purchased a 1993 Cobra, 5.0, the engine has been bored out to a 306, it has stage II heads on it and a competition cam. It was setup for a blower but the owner put the original cobra intake back on it before I bought it. I cannot get it to idle, it use to quit when I stopped at a red light, etc... I set the timing and now it will idle but not very smooth, it will idle at around 900 rpms and then it will start surging from 6/700 rpms to 15/1800 rpms. Need help with this one as I am not too familiar with this model. (most of my experience is with carb's) Any help would be appreciated. I haven't checked any vacuum lines yet for leaks.
thanks

you might want to figure out what "stage II heads" and a "competition cam" really are... Sounds like someone took you for a ride.

Update, the cam is an Anderson B41 cam, and the heads are, twisted wedge stage 2 ported heads. I checked for vacuum leaks, non found, I also checked the throttle position sensor, appears to be functioning ok (I took a known good tps and installed it and it didn't make a difference). I unplugged the battery for 30 minutes to reset the computoer and set the tb and the cold air valve. I double checked the timing. Am I missing something? Any and all comments welcome (as long as you don't cuss me...Ha...sorry couldn't resist). thanks

Does the check engine light ever come on? Even if it doesn't, you might consider checking the codes. If you don't have a scanner, Autozone (or other parts stores) may have one you can use in the parking lot. I've seen codes pop up before with no Check Engine light... I'm kind of doubting you'll get a code that'll help with this issue but it's worth a shot.

Could be sucking air from the bottom of the intake ports if Felpro 1250's weren't used to seal up the larger parts of the heads.
Need to also check fuel pressure.

Great suggestions by all, I have run most of these down. It is a little smother now, but the racing cam in it is a little too much for me and everyday driving.
Thanks to all.
