Your battery cables may be bad. They will degrade over time due to water intrusion and electrical overloading. They may not even be the right cables for your car. Replacing is inexpensive, less than $35 for the two cables from Rock Auto. I just went through this with my '90 LX. Car would start fine, amp gauge would read low, at next start once car warmed up it would barely crank. Replaced the batter cables and all is good now. In process of replacing the battery cables, make sure the connections are clean and not corroded or gunked up.
Hopefully replacing the alternator fixed his immediate problem. I'm an advocate of replacing battery cables periodically as a maintenance item. It made such a difference on my Mustang. The starter was cranking slowly and once the engine was warmed up, slower or not at all. Replaced the alternator and battery and starter and no improvement. Thought the issue was heat soak so put an insulating blanket on the starter, still no change. Replaced the battery cables and the starter turns over faster than it ever has, and the engine runs smoother and has more power. No substitute for getting the juice from the battery to the engine and starter.
