where is a 12volt wire?
hey guys since you guys that are in hear all the time work with the radio on cars and electronics, do you know where a 12 volt wire is that i could get to easilly soo i can tap that for my radar detector? i want it to be off when the key is off and the wire to be on when the key is on. my valentine one detector came with a wire splice that has a fuse built in. thanks for any help
I just wired my Ipod adapter about 3 mins ago and I had to tap a 12V wire. I tapped it to one of the connectors going into my Mach460 head unit. On the 16 pin connector going into the back of the head unit, pin #9 is the 12V power source. Here is a diagram.

yea thats what peaple are telling me to do but i dont have a 460. i just have the base radio with cd player in my 04. is it still the same? how do i get the radio out?
The diagram says base/premium so I assume it is the same. The 12V power wire is the pink and light blue one. To get the radio out you have to pry off the molding around your shifter and the molding around your vents and A/C and stereo. They're two different pieces. Once you get that off, there are two screws below the radio that is holding it in. Unscrew those and it slides right out. That's how you do it for the 460 at least, I'm not sure if it's the same for yours.
just run a wire to your fuse panel under the dash. look in your owners manual for an accesory spot or an ignition controlled one. If you can't find a diagram, get out a multimeter and test each empty slot first with the car off then with the car on, if you have power when you hit the key, then thats your ticket. Also may want to throw a 10 amp in-line fuse on that wire.
