hyperground cables
Ive replaced all my electrical wiring like that under my hood with 0ga, from the battery to chassis.from the alt to the battery you name it ive replaced it. I had the extra cable lying around so i figured it couldnt hurt. I replaced it all when i installed my 300amp Alternator
I had a bad ground on the factory cable after a body shop forgot to put it back on after some fender damage. It burned up a battery and was causing all kinds of strange electrical problems. It was hard to diagnose as it looked like a the bolt was good but it would wiggle under pressure. A loose fitting cable/connection will eventually build up corrosion and resistance and can lead to the above mentioned problems.
Another example: Had a customer come in with a poorly installed(shop across town) system with a bad noise problem, really bad. At first glance at the amps the rca's had been cut, and reconnected with twist nuts(really really bad). I yanked theirs out and replaced them with a new set, noise was only slightly less... Tried regrounding the amp to the same point as the amp by running a ground wire to the amp and got no change.... Tried grounding the outer shield of the rca and still nothing...... Tried a ground loop isolater forward and backwards aaaaannnddd still nothing........... By this time the customer had somehow made his way through the wood room(while 2 boxes were being made) through the garage to the first spot outside where I was in his truck, he had an appointment and needed to go........ I put everything back together and went to start the truck and the battery was dead. I shouldn't have been dead yet as I really didn't play it long but nobiggie I'll grab the battery charger and crank it right over. The battery charger on high didn't crank anything so I let it charge for a while and after 10 mins it still would not start. I grabbed the ground on the battery(which was new) and the ground connection was not tight. AH! found my problem right? No the pain in the !@# customer now was(stick with me now it get good).....
The whole time I had the charger on the truck the guy was spouting that the truck needed an occasional jump start and the battery was new. When I asked a little more it was actually dying 2-3 times a week, "But it always starts with the jumper cables. Get some cables and it will crank right over?!".
"Sir if your battery is dying that much it is probably bad."--me
"It can't be its new"----him
"but your ground is loose and that can lead to a bad battery"--me
"But its new?!"--dumb!@#
"And its bad."--me
"but its new, get some cables and it will crank over?!"--dumb!@#
"It the charger on high after now 20 mins doesn't start it there is a problem"
We mad that chorus 3-4 times...............
I tried cleaning the connection quickly(coka cola and a wire brush worked like a charm) and it still did not even budge and again all the while with him now looking in the shop for jumper cables while mumbling like rainman about them as if Wopner was on if 14 mins...........
"let me go get the owner/manager to help."
I went up front and politly waited to the side while he was talking to a customer about idunno when he just looked over and asked what was up? I told him that I could use his help in the back(he is a good troubleshooter as well) and he again asked what was up. I asked him if he wanted me to jumpstart the truck off of the range rover or the bimmer and he looked at me counfused as did the lady. I told him that the battery on the truck was bad, he said get the charger, I said I did, he said let it sit and charge, I said I did and the ground was really loose, he said OOOHHH the battery is probably bad, I said I know I told him and he said it is new and the customer is always right... do you see my problem now(With a PALEASE grin!!!)?????????? She laughed and he again thanked the lady and said he needed to go.
I went back and sat on the side of the shop directly below the ac vent, drinking my nice cold gatoraid(phonix in june 105+) while the owner did the chorus a couple of more times with rainman while he started peeking in the rang rover and bimmer for jumper cables. I grinned, laughed outloud really.
20 mins later we slapped a yellow top in that bEEOOOCH and it cranked over with no noise on the first turn............ I never look at the bills I just turn the wrench but I hope he took that guy and shook him upside down until his pocket lent fell out AAANNNNDDDD at least rainmandumb!@# quit his mumbling when I gave him his key back... I take that back he should have mumbled "I'm sorry, K-mart sucks"
end rant carry on.....
