Do you have an aftermarket radio or stock? Adjust your settings to lower bass output from the speakers...leave a little though as having all the bass come out of the sub isn't really what you'll want unless you only listen to rap...your sub and amp have nothing to do with the speakers distorting...what you need is a 4 channel amp to power the speakers because they can't keep up with the sub right now...i'm sure that sub isn't what's distorting because i have two of them and the 1005 amp and mine do not distort at ALL
I would suggest adding bass blocks to your car speakers. Since you have the subs to handle your bass you won't need the speakers doing it. What is most likely causing your distortion is that when you turn the deck up, the speakers are trying to put out a ton of bass which they just can't handle.
You have/had a mach system in there right? The problem is you you hooked your head unit into the factory amp. When the sub amp is just getting worn out the jbl signal is already distorted to all heck. You need to bypass the factory amps with is pretty easy to do. See page 2 on my cardomain page in my signature.
There proper way is the crossovers. You can get inexpensive inline style ones, similar to what MB quart uses. As for tuning your sub, if the amp has a built in crossover for a true sub set it to 200mhz. Subs shouldnt play any frequencies any higher than that. Then make sure your bass boost (if it has it) is set to 0. Turn your gain all the way down.
Turn on your stereo (leave the amp and sub off), make the bass 0 (not -6 or whatever the minimal setting is), turn up the volume to almost max, then adjust the bass so there is no distortion. Turn on your amp/sub, crank it up, if you cant hear it very well, turn the gain up slowly to where it matches the volume of the interior speakers. Then if there isnt enough bass, turn up the bass boost very slowly until it reaches the level you want it to be at. Make sure you do this outside, because if you do it inside a garage or a shop the sound will reverberate (bounce) off of the walls, and it wont sound right.
I used to work at a custom sound shop, I tuned the stereo's, thats how I would do it. A lot of people like to use a scope, but Ive found that they dont do a very good job, I can make it hit harder and get louder without one. My car hits 137 dB, thats louder than a jet taking off next to your ear.
