Default Looking for wiring harness from '04 Mustang

Hi All,

I picked up a CD-6/Mach 1000 Head Unit for use in a Mazda. Got my dash surround all trimmed up as necessary while waiting for an ordered wiring harness to arrive, only to learn it wasn't the right one.

None of the local car stereo shops can get ahold of one.

According to inventory searches, no wrecking yard in the state has a '04 Mustang on hand.

The Ford dealer can only sell it as part of a *complete* dash rewiring kit.

The regional authorized Ford stereo service shop can't even get ahold of it from Visteon. It's supposedly Visteon's "New World" harness, which was only used on '04 Mustangs. This particular unit is from a Cobra, but I'm told that doesn't matter. Part # is 3R3T-18C815-TE.

I thought about trying to make my own pin connector setup in place of an actual harness, but the main port looks to have been designed precisely to defeat any such endeavor. Lots of odd spacing and different width and length pins.

I only need the end that connects to the HU itself. The other end I plan on splicing to my existing wiring. As I understand it (a schematic would sure help!), I need harnesses for two of the plugs -- the medium sized middle one (power, ground, and dimmer?) and the large one on the right (outputs) -- with the third small one on the left being for an optional add on changer.

So, here's hoping someone here has taken one of these HUs out of their car and has an unused harness lying around, or perhaps knows of a wrecking yard with a few on hand.

Thanks in advance!
Dan

Default RE: Looking for wiring harness from '04 Mustang

I was able to get the main plug, which contains power, acc, ground, and speaker outputs. Good news is, the stereo works. Bad news is, my fears were confirmed that the unit does indeed have separate bass outputs with an internal x-over. So, I'm getting nothing below 100 Hz or so.

I'm told the small, 8-pin plug on the left is for the bass outputs and optional CD changer add-on. I wasn't able to locate the necessary plug, although I found some 8-pin ones on other Ford/Mercury's that were a near match. With some trimming of the plug's plastic casing, I got one to fit nicely. Now I just need to figure out which output is which...

Questions:

1) Looking at the back of the HU, does anyone know which of the 8 pins corresponds to which output/input? I'm assuming 4 of the 8 are for sub outputs, 1 per channel. I don't know what the other 4 would be for, but I suppose a CD changer add-on could account for all 4.

2) Just out of curiosity, any idea what the x-over point is? I was told 150 Hz, but I don't think that's right. I sure hope it's not, at least, or the 4-channel amp and subs I just ordered will be put to waste with way too high of a setting...

3) I don't seem to have an output for power antenna on my main plug. Do the '04 Mustangs have a power antenna?

4) I have an input for Dimmer Ground, in addition to the regular Ground. My Mazda wiring has nothing to match up with that, but I'm guessing it isn't necessary?

5) The HU end of the main harness has 3 wires I haven't accounted for:

white/orange
red/blue
black

With the "universal" aftermarket harness, the white/orange connects up to pink, the red/blue to brown, and the black to orange/black (dimmer ground). The pink and brown (plus 3 other browns that connect to nothing on the OEM harness) are all labelled as Mute. Would those be system overrides for something like navigation or cell phones?

I think that's all, thanks.
