Help an old man--please
My recommedations head unit - Alpine - high quality and relatively inexpensive for what youre getting.
For interior speakers, of course this depends on the setup, 6.5" seperates or if $$$ is an issue coaxial speakers will do just fine. Boston acoustics are a decent good sounding speaker, Sonys' arent bad either.
Because the sub box is in the trunk, personally Id run rear speakers for a fuller sound. For all of the interior stuff Id use 1 4-channel amp. Amp brands for the interior - rockford fosgate, PPI (precision power), macintosh or Sony if you dont want to spend as much.
As for the sub in the trunk, use a sealed enclosure with 1 12" dual voice coil sub. As for brand preference, Id use rockford fosgate, they hit the hardest, sound the cleanest (whatever they renamed the HE2 series to). Id also run it off of a Rockford fosgate 2 channel amp, simply because theyre 1 ohm stable and A LOT cheaper than macintosh or PPI. That way you can bridge it at the sub and at the amp or run it in stereo (its not reccommended with a single speaker even if it is DVC). Use at least 4 guage power wire off of the battery to the trunk and no more than a 1 foot ground wire grounded to the body of the car in the trunk. You will also need a fuse block no further than 1 foot from the battery for the power wire.
At this point your alternator might be a concern when playing music at higher volumes with a lot of accessories going (lights, a/c, etc.). The lights might dim when the bass hits, at that point youd want to run at least a 130 amp alternator. Do not use capacitors, its a band aid fix for an alternator problem, just get the right size and youll be fine.
As mentioned before, run your RCA cables down one side of the car and the power wire on the other.

I use all rockford. But my stuff is about 3 years old.
If he likes rock and rap. Rock doesnt sound to great with bass. Depends on the artist really, and i mainly listen to rock and most rock songs dont sound that great through it.
dont let circuit city or bestbuy install anything, waste of money and they are known to fack up your cars wiring (not just speaker wise)
I've known some people to hook up an amp to their back speakers due to there bass being to high for them to actually hear the words, but does that even loudn the words? Because i thought it only increased bass inside the speakers.
What does your son have in his 02? Does he have one of the mach systems?

I haven't found a new 2 channel rockford amp that is1 or 2ohm stable bridged to a sub.
The old rockford stuff was great, but their new products suck.

No ****? When I worked at a local sound shop RF stuff was awesome. I havent looked into anything for a while, havent needed to. Im sure they have comp level stuff that alot more expensive than what you can buy at best buy.
It jsut means that their amp is crossed over at too high of a frequency. You NEVER want to play a sub any higher than 200hz. People voices usually fall into the 1khz range, unless youre like Arthur P. from WRIF or the lead singer from type O negative.

It really sucks that rockfords old made in the usa, vastly underrated, and bulletproof construction has fallen off a little in recent years. I LOVE the design of the newpunch and power series amps.Thier amps are still good, but you can do much better for the money.
A lot of the brands likerockford that used to offer great products have focused thier emphasis on marketing instead of speaker engineering and design.Companies like Kicker, rockfordand JL spend millions on marketing and thier product suffers from it. JL makes a great woofer in the W7, but a sub that performs equally can be picked up for half the price. You will find the same trends in a lot of the companies that have gone mass market to places like best buy and circuit city. Even my beloved eclipse has sacrificed a little.
What sucks is that you are giving great info, but some of yourbrandage is a little old school.
Flanders,
Bass sounds GREAT with rock. The key is to design the enclosurefor the woofer in the optimal condition to provide excellent sound quality.I have a single 12 that in the right enclosure is able to produce strong, clean, and sometimes (when I want it) loud bass.As P stated, your crossover is way to high.
As always Preal excellent recommendations. Check out my old system in my Altima eventually going in to the stang just a few minor changes. No Digital Design sub ID Max is the replacement and not Autotek Stealths, just a baby Memphis Belle. Everything else is the same.
