I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the post, but let me try to help....first which Garmin unit are you using. I might be familiar with it. Second, I'm assuming you've got it set up and all, and your problem is that you already entered a destination, now the unit keeps wanting to send you to that destination, and not just show a map of where you are now? It's been a while since I've owned a Garmin, but I remember there was a way to stop navigation, and then it would just show you the map of where you are now. Try read the manual for how to stop navigation, and then when you are actually ready to head out west, look under recent addresses or whatever Garmin is calling them now.

Exactly right, at least on my Nuvi 360. At the bottom center of the display should be a "stop" button. Press it, then on the main menu, press "view map". Again that's assuming you have a Nuvi, but I assume most models work similarly.
