Default Head unit location

has there been anybody that has mounted the head unit below the regular spot in the 2000's where there is a seperation between the CD player and the cassette above it?
i think i'd almost like to have it in the lower slot?

I have thought the same but there is a metal bracket that runs behind it. Some decks will fit but most will not.

just would be more compatable with the shift *** there and the part above it would keep the sun off of it. what is that bracket for and is there any chance it could be removed?

I know I know I agree.... I am not sayin it can't be done. I shoe-horned in a Nakamichi 6 disk indash changer in my buddies in there but I was almost to the point of pushing it in with my shoe! I am actually going to be in my dash tonight and will try and take a look. I would never cut out a metal bracket in a dash in my own car, but I'll see if I would do it if it were someone elses fer ya.....

It has been done before. A lot of times, people mount the HU down there so that they can mount gauges in the original spot so they are more visible to the driver. I'm not sure how much work it would be though...

sorry fer the delay, been busy in the dash. I had been kicking around the idea and when I thought about it that buddy's changer we put in there was deep as hell. If you have the mach system(as I do)there is a factory amp under the pocket that will need to be removed but is easily done with 3 screws. Once it is out the deck will go in at an angle just under that brace I mentioned ealier. I went ahead and switched mine and to make it a little harder then it had to be I molded my alpines trim ring into the dash and mounted the deck from the rear. I need one more part tomorrow and I will have it finished and post pics. It will look pretty smooth I must say.......

how much do those mach amps weigh? and where is the second one? I'll be running my power to the speakers (for now, until i get componants and an amp) from my head unit. I'd rather just do away with the amps if they're just going to be sitting in there being useless and weighty....thanks and try to post those pics asap i'm very interested in seeing them.

They're pretty small unless you have a Mach system where you have a few of them...It would be better to just leave them in there if you ever plan on selling the car (without your aftermarket system).

you are not going to gain any time on yer 1/4 mile from removing them. The mach system had 3 amps and a large enclosure that had to come out.

I am hoping to get it all back in today, it got delayed when I realized I wanted to do another project I have been considering. I wanted to build a small power dist center to run all of my accesories and needed it centrally located to make all the wiring neat and clean, properly fused and easy to get to. When I moved the deck down I realized that the old location was perfect for this. I built a small place with terminal blocks for constant, switched, remote power as well as ground so that I can powe the radar detector, external sirius unit, power for the dist block, as well as the current and voltage gauges I want. The front of it will have the gauges on display behind plexi, as well as amp status led's(dual color) and a security led. I will run a single 8 awg to it to power everything now as well as anything I should want to add in the future. I mounted it to the same piece that was on the back of the factory radio that slide down the rail so that I can even pull it out 4-5 inches from the front to check stuff. If it comes out the way I want it should be pretty smooth I think.....
