Default changing headunit

my 99 has the standard soundsystem (radio/cassette and single cd-player).
i would like to change the factory radio into a aftermarket one. so my questions are:

- how do i get the headunit out of the radio pit?
- can i use a aftermarket radio/cd-player with the original plug? or do i need some extra adapter or plug?
- anything else i have to consider?

thank you for help.

go to a local auto parts store or stereo place and get a ford radio removal tool. $5 and it comes with instructions. When you pull the deck out take it into the store and get a hrns there that matches the back of the radio to make it easier to install.

You need to get a harness for an aftermarket head unit. In the US you can get them at most electronics stores but I'm not sure about Germany. The harness is just so that you don't have to cut or splice into the wires in your dash.

I don't know how the removal goes for a 99, but in my 04 it was a matter of removing the trim around the shifter/radio/ac controls/air vents, and the 4 screws holding it in place.

And remember to unplug your battery before doing audio work or you'll find yourself buying new fuses.

thx for your tips.

i´ll try to get it here or i have to buy it over ebay.com.
i´m annoyed i didn´t buy these things during my stay in las vegas in may... :-(

i think 99 and 04 is different. your headunit is double-din, isn´t it?

Yeah it is a double din, but I'd imagine there couldn't be THAT much of a difference in removal. All I was suggesting is that under the trim, my stock head unit was held in by 4 screws and I didn't need any special removal tool. So you may want to check before you go buying one. I've never had a 99 stang so I wouldn't know, but just a thought.
