Default Ground (or noise?) question

Hey guys!

I recently purchased a new headunit for my radio. Everything works great except that I hear a small humming coming from the radio when the car is running. I've read a lot of posts about the subject and a lot of people say that changing the rca's can help fix the problem.

However, I bought a pre-made harness from internet which converts the existing wiring of my mach 460 system to be able to plug my amp's to my headunit and since this peice of equipement is rather specific, I can't change them.

So this is my question :-What else could cause this problem, could it be a bad ground? (I've looked everywhere and double-checked everything and it all seems good) and if not, is there a way to prevent interference or to cut the noise off? (I don't know, maybe there's a way to tweak the rca's to eilminate the interference?)

This is really bugging me. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Nick

bad grounds are often areas for noise to get in. Exactly what is in the car?

the mach 460 original stock speakers. I just changed the headunit.... that's it.

The noise stops when I unplug my rca plugs out of my headunit... maybe this can give you a clue of the problem.

I assume the noise vary's with the engine rpms? look real quick on all of your hrns's and see if there is a black wire with a white stripe. If you look closely on the wire it should say "amp ground", see if it is hooked up and if not then hook it up. It sounds like your factory amps are picking up and amplifying a noisey signal they are picking up somewhere. You can always try a ground loop isolator, be sure to plug it in backwards as well but they rarely work.....

Ok, well I've looked into what you told me and the ground wire is correctly "grounded".

I'll try and look into a ground loop isolator, hoping this will work. Otherwise, I guess I'll have to wait until I upgrade my amp's.

Do you recommend any brands? I want something that will sound nice with a lot of bassand that I could potentially install on my own. I would also like to know what kind of wiring I would need if I decide to go ahead with the install.

That'sall for now... :P

Thank you very much. Your help is very appreciated.

If the noise is high-pitched, it gets higher and slightly louder when you increase the rpm's, and you only hear it when the car engine is ON, then it is most definately caused by a ground loop. Just install a ground loop isolator and it should solve the problem.

Hey guys,

The problem was in fact the ground loop... soI bought a ground loop isolator and it fixed the problem perfectly.

Thank you very much guys,

I'm really happy now!!

well a ground loop isolator is just a band-aid for the problem. It will cover it up and may keep it from getting worse but is a sign that there is something still wrong. If you add equipment later you may have more noise.
