The Big 3 (1998 Mustang)
i know how to do it [thanks to a bunch of online walk-throughs, the main one being ttocs']
but, there's a problem. my alt isn'tlike other's, I guess. i only have one bolt sticking out [for the ground i'm assuming]. and then i have this rubber boot with 4 wires sticking out, one in which goes right back and re-attaches to the alt. how am i supposed to do the big 3 with this set-up? if i even can.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
dunno mang[:-]?
You will either need to find out what kind of end is on that wire and try to put it on a thicker power wire(8 awg looks to be a stretch even). I have heard that doing an upgrade to an alt out of my mustang(sn95 style) is a popular thing to do and now I see why. That SINGLE wire is what isrunning your ENTIRE electrical system. Even if you have 4 awge going to your amp that is a heck of a choke point. I replaced my alt last year for around $80 I think and I would start there before I did any wire upgrades.
When I finally get the money for my wire and dynamat together and finish my install I will need to upgrade my alt to a 200A high output and will be sellin mine. I put it it less then 5k miles ago....

There should be markings on the alt regarding each terminal.
Most alts work like this.... but check it out for your application.
I would bet that large wire is the power wire and goes to the battery or a d-block of some sort. Have you tried following the wire?
If that wire is the power wire, the alt is grounded through its connection to the motor and then the motor is ground to the chassis.

Grab a voltmeter and see what voltage is at that large wire on the back, if it's 12V that's your power wire.
Most of the time there isn't a ground wire, as PReal just said, the alt is grounded via it's attachment to the block.

oh crap, ignor what I said i didn't see the thicker wire on off the side(the black camoflaged it). THAT is the wire you need to upgrade. wiggle the cover off, unscrew it and it has a ring terminal on it........ I must have hit the pipe right before lookin at that.
As they said the alt is grounded through the chassis/engine. I added a ground by pulling another ring terminal on a ground wire, and attached that wire to one of the bolts holding the alt on. I ran that ground wire next to my new power wire and connected the ground at the chassis behind my air cleaner.
#1 - You want to upgrade the wire from the alt to the battery
#2 - you want to upgrade the ground wire from the engine/alt to the chassis/batt
#3 - you want to upgrade the ground wire from the battery to the chassis
hence, the big 3
