Opinions from car audio gurus! Deck and speakers
I am looking to replace the factory tape deck and speakers in my 89lx convertible. I talked with a tech at crutchfield and told her i was looking for something with an ipod connection, and had to sound crystal clear over the motor with the top down. I didn't want anything Kenwood because of problems with them in the past. I didn't want anything with a mechanical face for the same reasons. I didn't give her a price range i was looking for to avoid being sold something over the top. Just want it to sound good playing rock and metal pretty loud.
She suggested the Alpine CDA-9884 cd player because it is very user friendly with an ipod. She did say the Pioneers tended to pick up am/fm channels a little more clearly generally speaking. The face folds down (not mechanically though) which i thought was good since the pollen is bad in the spring and i may have the top down as soon as the nice weather comes. Don't want any crap getting in the cd player. It's rated at 18watts RMS and 50x4 peak power i think.
For the speakers she recommends Infinity Reference 6022si 6 1/2 2 way shallow speakers for the doors and Infinity Reference 3022cf 3 1/2 2 ways for the dash.
How do you think this would sound? I want it to be loud and clear. I don't need a lot of base for "boots in the dryer music" but i do want to hear the bass guitars and the bass drums to have a little thud to them when i'm jammin'. Thanks for all input.

Alpine is a very friendly ipod interface but audio controls are horrible. Go pioneer better sound controls Ipod interface it nice. check out the Pioneer Deh-p5000ub or 6000ub. On the pioneer you can control the ipod on the deck screen or on the ipod if you have a passenger in the car and dont want them messing around on the controls on the radio.
Speakers should sound nice but yes look at getting a 4 channel amp to get them louder when your driving with the top down Or do a 2 amp system 1 for the speakers and one for a sub to get those lower bass notes. 5 channel can be a way to go 4 channels run the 4 interior speakers and the 5th channel runs a small 10" woofer.

i havent had any issues with alpine, as far as headunits, but i have had several JVC's and have loved every one. i just bought my dad a JVC Aresonal w/HD Radio, IPOD Conn, and bluetooth. the face plate is motorized on all of the JVC Aersonal's but have had no issues. the h.u. in my stang is JVC and i have had it for about 2 years and the faceplate works fine.
as far as speakers, pick up some infinity kappa's off of ebay. same price, 10x better sound, handle a lot more wattage if you do decide to put a 4 channel amp in.
