Default Why is my stock system overdriving?

I have a stock 2000 mustang system... Let's clarify, this is NOT a Mach system...like this:

I have stock speakers (Ford's POS max 25watt speakers), and i turn my music up to about the halfway point on the volume. I go any higher and it sounds like the system is overdriving the speakers, causing the sound to dim whenever the bass hits.
bass/treble/fade/balance to stock settings, and even after that, i take it past the halfway point and it still overdrives. It's really making me mad because i love my system to be loud, but it's not loud enough. I'm a music freak, so when I'm racing some ricer in a civic, i like my adrenaline junkie CD to be louder than just to where i can barely hear it myself.

Can anyone help me with this problem? I would buy a aftermarket system + speakers, but money is very hard to come by right now. I plan on getting rid of the system as soon as some extra income comes my way.

Thanks!

I put my EQ in stock settings, and even after that, i take it past the halfway point and it still overdrives.
I'm lost, you say stock system but yet mention an EQ. Is there an aftermarket component on this, or are you talking about the bass/treble controls? Bass/Treble is not an EQ.

I'm going to guess you're experiencing distortion, based upon the lower wattage and stock components. You're working the system much harder than it was really meant to be worked. You might also check the speakers to ensure they haven't been damaged, or even dry rotted as the stock speakers will often do.

I edited the post, thanks for correcting me on that, my mistake. I don't think the speakers have been damaged, they look OK to me. But shouldn't the system match the speakers when they manufactured the car to put out the volume that the Head Unit puts out? Seems kinda strange, dont you think?

I wanted to clarify the EQ-Bass/Treble difference, because I wanted to make sure to eliminate an aftermarket component that might be part of the problem.

But shouldn't the system match the speakers when they manufactured the car to put out the volume that the Head Unit puts out?
Not necessarily. An entry level system, which it what the non-Mach was, will give you "entry-level" results. It would be unreasonable to find large amounts of distortion in an entry-level head unit and speakers.

It's also possible, I don't know for a fact offhand though, that the speakers are the same as the Mach version. This would mean they are receiving much less power than the Mach version of the radio would put out, making distortion rear it's ugly head.

Until the Mach system, Mustang's didn't have much in the way of a decent system. The base radio you describe really isn't much better than what the Fox-bodies were equipped with, except for the fact you can at least play a CD.

The end result is you'll need to look at upgrading to get any decent sound out of your car.

Keep in mind that if you're not using a amp, you'll really be underdriving a sub. This will really cause some distortion.
