Default Mileage computer/display

Does anyone know how to add the fuel mileage computer? I have a non-equipped 2007 V6 and I'd like to add in that display. Does it involve more systems than a button and gauge cluster? Any info helps!

Can anyone tell me what is involved in the message center option on the new mustangs?

Displays MPG, miles to empty, tripometer, time of travel. I think that's about it. Don't have it, but that's what I recall from a test drive.

my 94 does it for me. I hit the trip reset when I get gas, and then divide the miles driven by how many gallons I filled up with on my phone.

I do not know of anyone that has done this, and I would hazard to guess if it would be legal for anyone less then a trained expert since you would need to tap the signal from the odometer. Any modifications of odometers are of course illegal.

I fail to see how adding a factory option would be illegal. The gauge cluster in some of the new mustangs gives you instantaneous MPG as well as a few other functions. There's no modifications to the odometer, some part of the setup takes in current speed and pairs it to fuel flow to show your fuel economy. I know I will need a new cluster with the digital display, and the menu buttons which leaves 2 questions:

1. Does the cluster do all the work, or is there another box in the wiring?
2. Are the new mustang all wired for it?

Where your odometer is located is also where it displays all the information (fuel econ, etc.) so if you installed a different setup in there it would erase (I think) all the miles on the vehicle and start fresh, which is illegal. Like ttocs said, it would probably have to be done by some professional, or the Ford dealership or something, and it would also be a pain I'm guessing since they will:

-Overcharge you
-I would guess they would require a bunch of documentation on this (but I'm not 100% sure)
-They would have to program your old OD's number in it somehow

I dont think it would be worth it!! :S

If your trying to ask if you can make your CURRENT odometer have these functions without having to replace the whole setup I dont believe thats possible.

I found out the answer, It seems there is no rule of thumb if the car was prewired for it or not. The dealer programs the new cluster with your mileage. THe buttons are the only other piece you need, so if the car is prewired for it, you are good to go with a new cluster and buttons. To stay legal you must document the mileage change.

If the car is not prewired then it is way too extensive to wire. If you were to buy all parts new from Ford and have them do the labor it's $600, just parts and programming can run you $250.
