Best Do-It-All Head unit?
I just got a Pioneer AVIC-Z2 put in. Highly recommended. I have the Z3 software update so I basically have the Z3 but for what you pay its way worth it. Anything Pioneer or Alpine for fully loaded decks.
Whats up Branoman --- question u ask I am assuming that budget wasn't a factor because it wasn't listed as a criteria. You are going to get opinions all over the place on this one and everyone is going to tell you they love what they have...but but but....I love AVN units and have had 5 different ones, so I give you my humble opinion.
Pioneer - pretty much dominates the AVN market. They also offer several models in this area. The D series you can score at an absolute steal from where they were just 18 months ago. The downside to the unit is the Navi is DVD based which means you have to constantly switch Nav DVD's and Music & Movie DVD's in and out of the slot. The Z series made the improvement to that with the introduction of the hard drive based Navi system and it incorporated more functionality but at a bank busting price. I absolutely loved my Z-1 but I hated paying for it. The newer F-series that Icemizer chimed in on is what I currently have ready to install in my GT. It's got all the functionality at half the cost. However, all my reading on the unit was very clear to get one with the 2.0 software on it. The downside is the screen size is a bit smaller.
Eclipse - Sponsored my on a build and gave me an avn-5500. Loved the deck. Navi was always right on point and the audio was crystal clear. The downside to it was like the D series the Navi was DVD based. It's also dead cheap right now.
I asked you about price because some people don't mind switching out Navi and regular DVD's to save the money. I was like that too, but trust me you get friggin sick of that quick.

I just scored a deal on an Eclipse AVN52 for 600. It came with the ipod connection and blutooth module. So far I like it. It is still on sale at sonic electronix. Google them. I don't use the DVD so it isn't a big deal about having to swap nav dvd and regular dvds. And if any reason I want to throw in a dvd, I usually know where I am going so the navigation isn't needed.
