smoking amp!!!
ok so i changed the fuse and i went to turn up the music and my amp (JL Audio 1000.1) started lightly smoking. I immediately shut the car off and felt the amp which was incredibly hot for only using it for 2 minutes. I also noticed that the red 'thermal' light was on. I called up a JL dealer and they said my amp was probably blown. Now heres the thing, if my amp was blown wouldnt my subs not work??? I was thinking it over heated because it was lie 100 degrees today, but what do YOU think?
ah if there is smoke there is fire, you could have fried a capacitor or resistor and to your question, yes the amp will play as its going out. expensive amp send it in or take it back what ohm load were you at?
See my answer to your other post. Should never use a larger than called for fuse. You most likely allowed something on the circuit board to fry by doing that.
Lets say the amp is capable of a 2ohm load. And lets say your subs are rated at 2 ohm, but you strapped them together on the speaker output in parallel? Well, you just created a 1ohm load that a 2ohm amp cannot handle and will generate excessive heat and either shut itself off via protection circuit or allow the fuse to blow.
By using a bigger fuse, you allowed it to get TOO hot and fry a circuit board component before the fuse could blow!!

Well I see the rules as being intended to prevent teens from going out late to parties, drinking and driving after parties, driving around with a bunch of friends and being up to no good. I don't participate in any of that so if I'm over my friend's house playing Madden until 1 and I want to make the 10 minute drive home... I'm going to do it. Also, I might bring a couple of younger friends (girls) out or something or give them a ride somewhere and I'm also going to do that. I figure if I'm not driving like a dic k or anything it shouldn't be that much of a problem.

That's what I say. I've seen so much misinformation on amps on a lot of internet boards it's nice to see someone who understands how the actual wiring of your speakers can affect OHMs and heat. If the fuse blows in the first place, find the problem, don't just put a band-aid on it by sticking a bigger fuse in it and hope it holds.Anyways, if it smoked you may have done permanent damage. You won't know until you first find out what load your amp is seeing and rewire them if necessary, put the proper fuse back in, and see what happenes. Also, check the gain on the input side of your AMP. if it's turned up all the way, you could be overloading by causing the amp to use the wrong multiplier on the incoming voltage.
Take a volt meter and see what the RCA plug voltage is that comes out of the head-unit before it gets to the amp. Adjust the gain on the Amp accordingly.

1000/1's are rated for 1.5 - 4 ohms, making them very difficult to burn up. the only time i have seen these fry is if the power or ground wire is not large enough. 4gauge is the minimum, and not a wall mart kit, you will need rockford or street wires, or comporable to achieve your power.
On your question, if the amp smoked, it has burned up, send it back and get it repaired (1 year warranty if bought through a JL dealer)
