Default good sound system

My B/f has an 87 5.0 mustang, which has quite a few Cobra parts. But his radio and speakers suck. I'm looking to get him a CD player and speakers for X-mas. The most important thing would be good speakers, I think, because while his CD player is decent, his speakers blew out a long time ago and it hurts to listen to music in his car. Keeping the integrity of the mustang with the CD player and speakers, what would be the best choice for good value?

Thanks!!!!

Assuming you're staying within average budget, Alpine/Pioneer would be decent entry level brands.

Ok checked your speaker size's, not all of these are applicable. Dash-3 1/2, front door-6 1/2, rear side panel-6x8, trunk area-6x8.
You may only have front doors and rear side panels, it just depends on the vehicle. Which ever you have try and find an MTX dealer around you replace all the speakers with the MTX coaxials, they will be as loud and sound just as good as alpine type-r's but are much cheaper. Deck go with something that fits the remaining amount you have to spend. I also recommend the Alpine Pioneer suggestion.
Pioneer Decks- 2700 $120, 3700 $150, 6700 $220, 7700 $270
Alpine decks- 9843 $150, 9845 $180, 9847 $200, 9851 $270
I would reccomend the 6700, and the 9851...The 6700 is an awesome deck for the money.

I would go with a deck that plays Mp3's and most do now-a-days pioneer is a good choice. I like Alpine but only in there upper end stuff. Clarion makes nice stuff as well. Keep in mind that he might want to add an amp or 2 so make sure there are pre-outs and a good eq.

Speakers....this is tricky because they differ in sound, what sounds goods to me might be to hollow or dull to you. With that in mind I this a good componit set for the front, 6.5" in the rear(they will fit) and 6x9's on the trunk lid would be more than enough (you can skip the 6x9's and get subs) The most important ones are going to be the front and the 6x9's. All of you highs and mid ranges are primarally going to be comming from the front and the bass from the 6x9's. All of these speakers are going to create alot of midrange. Tweeters should be no larger than 2" 3-5" for midrange, 6-7 for low end midrange and over 8" for a sub.
Confused? good.
Speaker brands....this is where you don't want to get cheap. An expensive deck will only sound as good as the speakers it comes to life with. However a cheap deck can sound good with a great speaker. Now brands that I like... JL Audio, MB Quart, Focal(expensive), and actually Polk is comming out with some decent stuff. If these are still to much $$ then look at Pioneer, infinity(I don't like) or MA Audio(good stuff!!) and planet Audio
You can PM me if you have any questions!
hope this helped

Well, I'd like to spend no more than $700. Is that possible with those items you mentioned, as well as having them installed? I'd like for it to just be done so he can enjoy it. How much would it cost to have installed?

Well it has been my experiance thar Mom & Pop stores will work with you on the price as long as you buy from them. Now your bigger stores like Cuircit City and best Buy are usally about $30 a pair for speakers. Head units are usally come on special, like buy one over $150 and get it installed for free. You will have to buy the wireing harness, about $15-$20.
I thik $700 could get you some descent stuff, assuming you are going with no amps and subs.
Take an afternoon and just look around and gather info!

Where are you located? If theres an MTX dealer around you I would reccomend this..
Pioneer 6700-$220, usually free Install, aside from parts. If he already has an aftermarket cd player in there than no worries, $30 otherwise.
MTX 6502 6 1/2"-$100, shops usually charge $32 to install, put the $70 towards something else and just have him install these. There easy.
MTX 6902 6x9"-$150 same as the 6 1/2"
MTX 3502 3 1/2"-$60
Thats $530 so far... If you don't have an MTX dealer around there than just replace the speakers I listed with either Alpine Type-R's or Infinity Reference speakers. You still have $170 but thats not enough to get a "worth while" sub and amp set and have them installed. Maybe wait until his birthday for the amp sub deal. Install and the wiring and stuff should run about $150 plus the product. I recommend... MTX SLHT7512D and the 3401 amp to pair with it, should be about $500, again if theres no MTX around you maybe this would be equal performance, Alpine SWR-12 $175, V12 M605 amp $400, Enclosure $125 so $700, honestly the MTX package would kill that Alpine package and it's $200 cheaper, try to find an MTX dealer. Their stuff cannot be beat for the money.
