Default Dual coil sub hookup

I am installing a set of dual coil subs, but I'm not sure how to wire them. I have always ran a separate wire from the speaker box terminal to each of the hookups on the sub, but I was told yesterday that I am only supposed to run the wires to one side of the sub, then run a wire from those terminals around to the ones on the other side of the speaker. I have little knowledge about this stuff...which one is right?
