blew a speaker, crap
hello all~
Long story short, my girl and I went through a rough week where she had to 'find herself' so in that time I hung out with this hot azz friend of mine, and we had my radio blasting almost to the max the entire time we were ever in my car. 1997 GT with mach 460 audio system.
I have since noticed, that on any volume, more noticable on quiet, when mid bass hits the front left door speaker buzzes like crazy. I have concluded that the speaker is blown. I guess "Go to sleep" by Eminem and "Down with the sickness" by Disturbed on near max volume are rough on speakers? haha, well the car has 108000 on it so it's due.
Is it worth it to find a good used mach 460 speaker to put in that slot or does anyone know of a brand of speaker superior to the mach 460s, so that I can save for a set of 4.
Thanks all!
George

used speaker is probaly about as good as yours. i think all fatory systems suck so i wouldnt replace factory with factory. if you had your volume near the max didnt you hear speaker distortion?
Hey buddy,
This happened to me too but a liiiiiiiittle different! Driver side 5x7 lost sound completely, then the passenger starting crackling like you've described. What did I do? Welp, first I bought a quick manual online on how to take my door panels off to get to the speaker, then went to Best Buy and bought a pair of Rockford Fosgate 6x8's. Put the passenger one in, no problem. Driver side, no sound. Took a voltage meter to it, no sound. At this point what I'm in hopes of doing by posting is maybe find someone who can help me out here with debugging what's going on here. Best Buy told me it'd be about 60 bucks total to "look" at it. I don't want some 17 year old kid ripping my stang apart, so if anyone has any ideas, please feel free to share. First thing I thought of was to check the wires throughout the boot between the door and body, but I'm not sure just yet how to take that off..
Thanks to all!

that's cool. I know I have no wiring issues, just a fried speaker, And no, there was no distortion. It sounded clearly all the way up. I figure I'll get a nice set of 2 speakers for the front for now, since the backs are still fine. It's just the mid bass that it blows on.

yea dude, if you want regular replacments, dont get fords lol get some nice ones. you need 4 - 6x8s. rockford fosgate has pretty good 6x8s for about 120 a pair

The ford speakers are not 4 ohm speakers. If you still have the stock head unit than you probably want to use factory replacements. If you want some used ones I just pulled the 460 out of my car this weekend. If you want to replace them with new speakers, go with a componet setup, otherwise you wont have the top speakers anymore.
