I think a tach mounted that low is just for "looks". Do you reeally want to be taking your eyes off the road that much? (you said you "need" this for autocross) If you want it to be useful, mount it on the cowl where you can see it and the road at the same time.

It actually isn't that bad. Every time I look at my speedo I can see the RPMs. For autocross I only need it for launching.
Found out yesterday at 40 mph 3rd gear it cruises at 1500 RPM. Maxed it out a 3500 RPM at the top of 1st at 30 mph and top of 2nd at 50 mph.

Mount it to the steering column with a hose clamp and paint the clamp black or the same color as your interior.
I still like mine since it looks vintage and matches the instrument cluster well. This is the one I got. I also used transparent green plastic to make it illuminate green instead of white to match the cluster better.
