Default First Mustang

Hello all!!! My husband and I have just purchased our first Mustang. It is a 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1, 3 speed with a 351w. It needs A LOT of work and my husband and I have never done this before. We know that we need to strip the car down and start with the body, but we aren't really sure where to go from there. Can anyone tell me a good book or magazine that gives you step by step procedures and tells you how to do it? Also, does anyone know a store other than advanced auto parts that would sell a rebuilt engine? They want $1500 for a 351w, just wondering if I could get it cheaper somewhere else.

Welcome to the forum!

You could check out the literature section in the back of Mustangs Unlimited, Mustangs Plus, CJ Pony Parts etc and look for books they offer. There are quite a few about restoring and rebuilding classic Mustangs.

You might consider looking on you tube etc for body work how to videos.

I wouldn't use another engine from advance if they gave one to me in fact they did. There is a reason it's only $1500. Its Junk. I got a reman 289 from them and it didn't last 500 miles before it gave out. It was under warranty so they replaced it with a 302 since they couldn't get another 289 and it ran like **** so I pulled it.

For the motor, I'd join local groups and do some networking in your area.

I found a local guy who is an engine builder via asking around and he can produce a much better quality product then some place like advanced auto. He comes highly recommended by several friends who have used him in the past so I feel pretty certain he is good at what he does. Just a guy that works out of his small shop with low overhead...those are the kind of guys you want to find.

Congrats on the purchase and I must say nice choice for your first mustang. I agree with networking with the local mustang/car clubs. I found a guy to work on my mustang through my brother and the local mustang group.

He does really good work and is about half the cost of most other shops. He even specializes in classic mustangs.

Can't go wrong with a little networking.

I also agree with RModel65 Woodsy uses quality parts in his engines. I'd rather spend a little more and know the engine will last.

Oh and post pics when you can.
