I know what you mean. When I first got my 65 running back in high school, it still had the 200 I6. We put a short glass pack on it and it sounded decent at idle and low speeds, but as the RPMs increased, it sounded kinda bad. It was because it of the I6. It actually sounded very much like my friend's early 70's VW Bug that had super beetle exhaust on it.
I swapped the glasspack out for a single in dual out transverse muffler for a Firebird, I think it was a Dynomax or similar turbo style muffler. It sounded good for a 6 cylinder after that.

I had Cherry Bomb Pros on our car with 2.5" pipes and the sound was awesome! I unfortunately replaced them with some Magnaflows and it sounds ..good.. now. Wife didn't hear them however there isn't a doubt in my mind they would have been too loud for her. The CB Pros really did sound fantastic and I've been thinking more and more of putting them on my next car. As loud as they were the awesome rumble was damned sexy.
The first show I took the car to I had these on and it attracted 3/4 of the people there away from the other cars when I pulled in. New car no one had seen helped as well.
