ok question now, i have the champion in and drove it around town for a solid 15-20 min, have an external trans cooler, and an electric fan the size of the radiator, and my temp was running constant around 195, never really got any warmer. how is this temp wise for a hi performance 306? i even think it spewed a little antifreeze in the driveway once i got home and shut it off(pretty sure it did just a little though). could i need a better flowing water pump? any ideas of what it could be? any input is helpful, because the radiator seems like it should have done the trick, but i feel like it didnt solve it completely... thanks

Assuming you have a good mechanical gage, what's wrong with 195*?
Do you have an overflow tank and line?
Are you using 50/50 and a good cap?
What temp does your fan come on?

@69mach1377: i wasnt sure if 195 was a good operating temp, and when i saw a little overflow from the radiator it made me wonder... i have a summit 4-way tach, with a temp, oil press, and volt gauge all in a 5in tach enclosure.

i have an overflow line, but no tank.

its gotta be a 50/50 mix cause i had my mechanic install it for me while he was putting in the new lifters and doing the rewiring for the tail running lights. i mean i doubt he would use anything else than a 50/50 but i could be wrong...

i have my fan on a switch that i can turn on and off, its annoying, but i just run it as soon as it hits 175 and leave it on, and then now its staying constant around 195ish.

I think you are fine...

My electric fan has an adjustment so I can control when the fan comes on BTW.
You should get a tank to recycle your coolant and not leave little puddles where you stop.

i think i am going to upgrade to a high flow aluminum water pump, because im pretty sure that i have a stock replacement water pump on my engine. i need a new cam anyway so i might as well get a new water pump in there.
