Default Looking for Performance Upgrades during rebuild of my 68' 302

My Pony has sprung a purdy bad leak in the rear main seal, and I have decided to pull and rebuild the motor while fixing it. As far as I know, it hasn't had any major service like this since 1991 when it went through a frame off restore.

As the head of a household of 5, I am on a pretty tight budget. However, I would be deeply upset, if during the rebuild of my motor, I didn't take full advantage of any cheap or simple modifications to gain some extra performance.

As of now, I am fairly certain everything in the motor is original or original replacement parts. It is the 302 J Code, and I am not necessarily dedicated to keeping everything original, as the color schemes etc on my 68' are not.

Let me know your thoughts out there, and I will be sure to answer any questions you need to throw out some idea's. Thanks!

Port and polish the heads or upgrade to aluminum, matching cam, intake, carb and headers. More air in and out is more power.

Thanks for the quick reply! Any idea's how much gains I could be looking at for each? I plan to run through all my options with cost vs gain to get some perspective on what would be my best options.

Each won't do...must be done as a combo. Alum heads will yield the most power when combined with the other parts (>50hp). P&P those little 302 heads won't get much (<25?). Download a free 'dyno2000' and play around before spending any money.
