Default Gas cap

Could someone out there help me understand how the cable ferrule is attached to the inside of the gas cap? My friend has a 65 and purchased an aftermarket gas cap. It has a hole for the ferrule; however, not sure how to take to one off of the old cap. The same type of ferrule connects the cap to the fill spout.

After you unscrew the cap, you will notice 5 or 6 screws that hold the filler tube to the outside of the car. At about 4 o'clock one of those screws is not a screw at all, but a bollt that is attached to the cable on the cap. Now, look inside the trunk, and you will see a 7/16 inch nut that holds that cable bolt to the body. Unbolt that, and the cap will come off the car.

Thanks for that advice. Is there a way to take the cable ferulle off of the cap so as to attach a new cap?

not really...the early 1965 Mustangs did not have a cable, so they were stolen quickly...
