Default Cam

i have a 68 'stang (as if the name didnt give it away) and i love it to death. I have really been thinking about upgrading the cam. I dont feel like pulling the motor and the only thing on the front right now is the radiator, so im pretty confident i can swap the cam just by pullin the radiator. I am running all edelbrock eqp. performer 289 intake, 600 cfm carb. and elite series air cleaner, any suggestions on cam size and lifters. Also with switching out the cam what other measures should i take to ensure the motor doesnt fall apart. Valve springs whatever, i want a cam that keeps the car dependalbe and drivable but i also want a throaty medium radical idle. any help guys?

Ford motorsports makes a great cam for older mustangs, simular to the shelby spec's of the day.

Used with an Edelbrock aluminum intake, a Holley 600 cfm carburetor and a ford dual point Distributor. The Cam Spec's are 472"int,496 exh, duration 295/300. The engine runs great and estimated horse power of 300 Hp.

Cheers.....[sm=icon_cheers.gif]

To ensure your engine does not fall apart, when you are installing a mild cam, all you really need to worry about upgrading is the valve springs, and hardened pushrods wouldnt hurt. Other then that stock replacement will cut it. Just so long that you dont plan on keepin it around 6K all of the time.

I would get the rest of the edelbrok package including cam, lifters and springs. It is matched to your intake.

I would recomend the edelbrock package, but there are a couple of other things to consider.
Do you have an auto or manaul trans?, what rear gears do you have?
Just by adding the performer cam to your engine, you won't be getting much of an improvement, and your idle will still be smooth. If you go bigger (higher lift, more duration) you will need higher compression, a stall converter (if auto) and lower rear gears.
Also I don't know what you have on the exhaust side, but stock is really restrictive, so any further engine modds, won't be fully effictive without a good set of extractors, and a free flowing twin exhaust.
Just remember, and engine has to be a matched to each modd. A really big cam in a stock motor, will be much worse than the stock cam.

that makes perfect sense. i have a nice dual flowmaster exhaust system that flows really well.

I too agree with the edelbrock package. IF not that exact camshaft then one with the same specs. Check out Summit Racing if you havent already. they have a wide variety of parts.

the cam cant be to agressive im putting a comp cam extreme energy rated to give hourse power from 800-4800. if you have stock heads a more agressive cam wont do a dam thing the ports are too small. i would deffinetly sidgest headers too. youl get more power and they will make your stang sound like more than a secrataries car
