Sounds like you have a mid 70's motor. They do have some vacum hoses that go to the thermostat housing. These usually found on the motors with the 2 vacum lines going to the dizzy. A pic would really help. You need to to identify what year motor you have, get a manual for that year of car and the line will be explained in there. Disconnecting anything with out understanding what it does, and what the effects will be, is not a good idea.

Ok John, I am not up to par with mid 70's motors. I am just very curious as to why there are vacuum hoses connected to the themostat housing. Why?

My guess would be it having to do something with all of the strict emission rules placed on the 70s stangs. Im looking it up right now.

EDIT: this pic is a late 70s ford granada 302. the three vacuum lines are OVER the housing not connected to it. or are those just wires that look like lines?

I think the piece you see on the water neck is a vacum switch that opened or closed when the water temp comes up

Hmmm. I am not a mid 70's guy, but isn't that the job of the thermostat? They had thermostats in the mid 70's, didn't they? This has me really curious, so you guys please continue to post as to why there is a vacuum hooked into the thermostat housing.

its sorta obstructed by the coil wire but you can see what it is. it is on top of the water neck and also the dizzy has two vacum lines

Do you have power brakes. Follow both of the lines off of the dizzy. where do they go? Well of course one goes to the carb, but what about the other?
