You can probably switch that thermostat housing out with the "right one" you cant really see mine.

so without the number behind the starter i wont actually be able to know what year or block my motor is?

Hmmm. I am not a mid 70's guy, but isn't that the job of the thermostat? They had thermostats in the mid 70's, didn't they? This has me really curious, so you guys please continue to post as to why there is a vacuum hooked into the thermostat housing.

I didnt mean it controlled the coolant. In my last 70s car (a z28) it had vacuum switches that opened and let vacuum pass through when the engine warmed up. It controlled things like spark timing for the emmisions controls

Yep, that is the same type of dual port switch as my 390.

Ok John, I am not up to par with mid 70's motors. I am just very curious as to why there are vacuum hoses connected to the themostat housing. Why?
Yeah, the older ones had them. Some operated the timing for the advance. Others operated egr and some other functions as well.
