Default 20w-50

i've always felt that 20-50 is too thick but i seem to be burning more and more oil.....

Does it make sense to continue using 10w-30 or 10w-40 and keep adding as i burn it or to start using the thicker stuff???

Unfortunately, a rebuild is out of the question at this point. Do many people here use 20-50???

I currently use SAE30 and am still going through oil at a unnatural rate and Ive been considering upping it to a straight 40 or getting some of those additives that claim to stop burning... So I dont think a 20-50 will hurt your car at all...

Also....i live in san diego in case that affects your suggestions.

Kbunny......i wouldn't want to put that stuff that looks like mollasses (sp?) in my engine......i get the feeling that it is sooooo thick that it may do damage somehow.

With a wear problem...no thickness of oil will prevent burning. What matters is your oil pressure and level. Keep both good to prevent wear in the first place. After that, it's all down hilllllll.......

Your best friend if you can't afford a rebuild. This stuff is like a cure-all. However, it IS thick as molasses, but don't worry about it. I put some of it in my 5.8 in my Bronco and my oil pressure and tapping problems ceased within a couple of hours of use. Of course it's not going to last forever, but it's good stuff for a temporary fix. When you do an oil change, put a quart of this stuff in instead of oil (so if you have a 5qt capacity put in a qt of Lucas and 4qts of engine oil). It'll reduce the problems you're having. If you're not changing it, just fill what's missing with Lucas until you do change it. You can actually use nothing but Lucas as your engine oil, but that's pretty much a last ditch effort to keep your engine alive.

the good news is that i do have good oil pressure......i did valve guide seals like 6 months ago so it must be getting past the rings.

i might try that lucas product at the next oil change though
