Attached is a scan of the cam specs the PO installed in my 65 Mustang (289) My question is how agressive is this cam? I expect it is not a factory replacment but I dont know if it just a hair more high preformance then stock or failry significant.

That is a great cam for a 289. In fact, if everything else is stock, it is my favorite "old school" grind for a 289. Gives just a touch of lope at about 700rpm. Works fine with a stock automatic. Good fuel mileage with a 500-600cfm vacuum secondary carb.
In other words... Ya done good!

That would be a lot of fun with a stroker and some tall gears. [sm=gears.gif]
Yee-Hawwww! Did you build the rest of the motor to rev? That thing would sound sweet at 7K rpms.

Something along this sound:

Have fun amigo! [sm=happy046.gif]

My 289 has a performer intake, Holley 600 cfm Carb, and dual exhaust. I have an automatic transmission and 350 gears.

This one is very similar to the one in my 86 GT. Be very carefull on how you time the cam. Mine is only like 1 degree different in grind with just a little more lift. I first installed it with no cam advance and then installed with 8 degrees of cam advance, it made more than 200 HP difference. The cam you have is for very high RPM

The cam you have suggestedat the start of this post is very close to the Performer RPM spec. Carb and gears seem right, however, your intake doesn't quite flow well enough, and without a mild stall converter, off the line will be a little slugish. This cam also responds well to slightly increased compression, aftermarket, or modified heads/valves, and headers or extractors. If you are intending to do some of this work in the future, great selection, but if you don't, this cam may be a little large for your basically stock setup, and you may find the Edelbrock Performer 204/214 cam more suitable.

What would you consider a mild TQ converter?

Match the stall converter to the cam rpm specs, so for a 1500 - 5500 cam, something just above the lower end of the cam spec would be good, ie 2000 rpm.

Also headers and a little porting on the exhaust side. I guess that's what I like so much about this cam. You can grow your engine quite a ways before you change it. Everything you do to stock components will net an appreciable difference. Yet it performs well stock. It is also a good cam to learn tuning with. Not until you do some serious head work (or replacement) will you need to change it.

BTW: I have nothing to do with any cam company (man I'm starting to sound like a commercial for Competition Cams here ). Kind of like your "first girl", this was the basic grind that took me from 15's to a consistent low 13 with my first hot rod back in the 70's.
