The water outlet comes out of the other side of the 302 block on the 80's model because it has a reverse rotation pump. This pump corresponds with the timing cover. Therefore if you put an older regualar rotation pump, and corresponding timing cover you will not need a new rad or different hoses. But beware, you cannot use the older style pump with the newer style cover, or vise versa, the outlets are different. But now you can use all of your older stuff and still have the newer engine.
