Default 66 Mustang Electrical

I have a problem I can not figure out and I am hopiing one of you guys have encountered and have a remedy. I can not get my emergency flashers to work unless I put the left or right blinker on. I have looked at the wiring diagram and looks like all roads run through the indicater switch in the steerng column. I think it has been shorted out. Have you evere seen this before and if so, are my assumptions correct? Any help would be appreciated.

Kind of depends on what you mean by don't work.

to help you out let me ask a few questions if you don't mind:

1) do the brake lights work correctly?

2). When you turn the flashers on which lights (if any) light up?

3). does the cigarette lighter work

4). have you swapped the emergency flasher unit with the turn signal flasher unit?

5). do you have a test light and/or a VOM?

Thanks,

Ok. First, Thanks for responding

Yes, the brake lights work.

The flashers were working. I found a "splice" from the previous owner into two blue wires going into the steering column. The splice was close to the column so I could only cover them with electrical tape. The emergency blinkers flashed very quickly before I found that. Now that I "repaired it, the flash for emergency is now slower. The blinkers have now stopped working. It appears the back lights for my blinkers do not light up so for whatever that reason is, I am sure that is why the left and right blinkers have stopped blinking. The cigarette lighter is not getting power. If I send power straight to the emergency flashers, it works. Otherwise the emergency flashers do not even light up unless I turn the left or right blinker on. I do have a meter. I have checked just about every wire I can find for a short.

As you can see, I have a few electrical issues. I am not too sure replacing the wiring harness is out of the question now.

Oh Yea. The Emergency flashers do not come on at all unless the blinker is on

Well, if your finding the previous owner has hacked into the harness, and you plan on keeping the car, this may be a very good time to replace the harness.
Either way, replace or repair, your into a lot of work.

Good luck with it.
