3 engine removal questions, well kinda 4 or 5...LOL
I am putting a new engine in my 68 coupe. I intend to pull the engine and tranny together.
#1 Do I need to totally remove the exhaust pipes from under the car? It's a single exhaust system and the 2 pipes coming from the exhaust manifolds come together right at the rear of the tranny. I was thinking of trying to break it loose there.
#2 What is the best way to break the rusted nuts on the E. manifold to pipe connection? Penetrating oil, heat?
#3 Do I need to remove the 2 braces that go from the firewall to where the shock absorbers connect in the engine compartment and are those bolt studs welded? I cant see anyway to get to the underneath side of the bolts that are near the shock absorbers.

The bolts on the shock tower to cowl are just bolts that you unscrew from the top, then unscrew the bolts on the cowl. You could take the pipes off at the junction like you suggested. You can try penetrating oil and heat, then get a 1/2" breaker bar with a cheater pipe and get after them. They will either twist off, or they will unscrew.
