Default Posi Install

I have a posi unit for my mach 1. How much on average would you expect the labor of installing this unit into the car? I live in southern california. Thanks.

Well, it depends if you have disks or drum brakes. Disks will probably take longer. Basically you pull off the wheels, hub or calipers, drain the housing, axles, then the drive shaft, then finally the 3 member. It isn't that hard. Reverse the order for reassembly. 3rd member (don't forget the gasket), drive shaft, Axles, fill the housing (DON'T forget), hub or calipers, then wheels.

The cleanest way to drain it is with a 5$ pump from an Auto parts store. Time, probably 3 hours if everything goes smoothly. Of course mine has been apart for a month because someone on this board ([:@]) suggested a nice clean and paint of the whole underbelly.

Rear brakes are Drum. But i meant to actually have a shop do it. What the average price of the install would be. Thanks for the reply though, doesnt sound to laborious.

I just had the pumpkin rebuilt and a Detroit Locker installed in mine. It cost $180.00 - that was with me removing the carrier assembly from the differential and bringing it in to the shop. I had estimates run between $200.00 and $400.00 for just the center section rebuild. Make sure you call around... my best price wound up being with a ring and pinion shop that has an account with my current employer (10% discount).

A couple of tips if you decide to remove it yourself -

*Carrier assembly weighs 76 pounds - make sure you have a friend to assist, or a good transmission jack with a strap to secure the assembly when you remove it.

* There are copper washers on every stud that holds the carrier to the housing. These have to be removed before you can pull the housing.

If you are doing this much you might consider a rebuild or refresh of bearings and seals. If you do it yourself, it costs about 40 to get the bearings pressed on the axle, 30 for the bearings, and 6 bucks for inner seals. I haven't bought the outer seals yet. I would guess about the same.

Yup, this is what I did. Complete rebuild with new 3:55's, Richmond locker and two new spider gears. ALL new seals and bearings (including axle bearings and seals)... Total cost was $750...
