68 ignition problem
Hello, everyone, just bought a 68 fastback with a 289, 2v autolite carb, and I'm having some ignition problems. First off, I'm VERY new to all the engine terminology, but learning fast, so any responders please talk to me like I'm a 2-year old.
The car has a 289, 2v, with petronix electrinic ignition. (" flame thrower" coil) On the turn of the key, the engine does turn over and accept the initial fuel, sounds strong, then the engine shuts down completely, not the electronics-(lights radio, etc..),just the engine. On a suggestion of a friend, I replaced the diaphragm and valve of the accelerator pump,(there was a small tear in the original valve). During this repair, I happened to break the distributor rotor, so I replaced that also. The car does start and run occasionaly, but hesitates badly on acceleration. I dialed down the hot idle screw and that helped a little. I will rebuild the carb if thats whats needed, it does not look too clean. Ther is also a mixed clear-black liquid on the ground at the exhaust(dual) Is this unburned fuel??? Please help, I'm very eager to learn and will appreciate any help!!!!!!

RE: 68 ignition problem
Should also add I did remove fuel line from carb to test fuel pump and filters- no problems there. I did pick up a 68 shop manual a couple weeks ago, so I can navigate my way around the engine compartment if someone can point me in the right direction on this. Thanks, John

RE: 68 ignition problem
There is an old alarm on it, the unit is still there on the drivers side fender apron, and the wiring is present under the dash. When I connected two plugs under the dash, the alarm blares. Is that then some type of open circuit or something??? If so, how do I eliminate it? Thanks, John
