"No big deal in today's modern world, but it was the thing back then."

I would say K codes are a big deal now especially to collectors. They are rare and no longer being produced

"The Mustang is not a VALUABLE car, and never has been. It is meant to be driven, and those who collect them for trailer queens are fools IMO."

Have you seen prices for K codes/Big Block/Boss 302's lately? Fools - yes

You didn't mention any casting numbers did you? A quick look at the heads should give you a C30E. It really sounds like you have found a 271HP K code Mustang. No big deal in today's modern world, but it was the thing back then. That Apron T thing could be from the crash I suppose, but I wouldn't think a repair shop back then would even worry about the VIN thing since the Mustangs were so plentiful. They would never have thought we we would even be having this conversation back then. The Mustang is not a VALUABLE car, and never has been. It is meant to be driven, and those who collect them for trailer queens are fools IMO.

a clean K fastback pulled $30K in 2000, a clean C code went for $15K, today that C can get $25-30K

Guys, My goal here is a SOLID frame!! And getting a solid frame the CEAPEST way possible!!! I figure I could sale the motor for a hefty price to help with sheet metal work.....I don't know, that might be dump because the motor and car together is worth MORE than the two seperate........Look, I am into restomod ALLLLL the way...but why pass up on a $6,000.00 K code fastabck wheather I want a restomod or not...some things from a finacal stand point seem to just make more since.

It allready has the disk brakes...I don't have to go buy them....
It already has a 9 inch rear end...I don't have to buy it either....
So it stands to reason I save a little money on those things alone........

OK , about a couple of issues detailed here;

IF the apron was replaced during a previous repair and IF the VIN number was stamped back into it wrong... just cut the apron out and replace it with an unmarked reproduction piece. Nothing unethical or dishonest about it. As another member put it... document the hell out of it all with photos and tell the story as you've told us.

If this car has a K code engine in it and the title and door tag match... it is a nice find. If you aren't going to buy it and if it's within a reasonable driving distance of my home here in northwest Arkansas , I'll be glad to pay a sizable finders fee if I buy it. It IS A VERY BIG DEAL in this collector car day and age. My wife has been hounding me for ages to buy her a 65-66 or a 69 fastback.

With respect to casting numbers... if you're going to build a concours quality car, they're critical. If you're going to drive it like it's stolen, put something in it that you don't mind thrashing a bit.

With respect to trailer queens. I guess I fall into the foolish category. My beloved Mach 1 isn't necessarily a daily driver but it ceratinly isn't driven in anything except sunshine and I never leave it unattended in a K-Mart parking lot. One thing I can tell you is that it is as clean underneath as it is on top and I like it that way. After all she's been through, she deserves to be pampered.

Again, if the car is real............ BUY IT !!!! If you're not going to bring it home , just let me know. Thanks, Dean 479-263-3326

If it runs get him to start it up, if it shakes like crazy then that harmonic balancer could have been slapped on there to make it look like a hipo. That harmonic balancer would create vibration on a normal 289 or 302 as the hipo 289 rotating assembly i believe was weighted differently. I agree with Soaring, get the numbers off the heads, that would tell you forsure.

I read through both posts and I gotta say you probobly have a great deal on your hands. The only thing I could see being a problem is if you buy the car and they hastle you at the DMV about the title VIN not matching the bodys stamped VIN. As far as I know they cannot use the door tag when they register the vehicle for you.

Keep in mind also that there is a second VIN stamped under the passenger side fender that you cannot see until you pull the fender off. If you buy the car that would be the very first thing I would check.

As far as the ethics part goes I would say if you do get the car and get it titled and registered make sure you keep copies of everything. Scan the title your getting from him, keep everything documented, and when you pull the passenger fender off take pictures of both VIN numbers and I would even keep the mis-stamped one (if thats really what it is).

Oh yeah, one last thing. If you just want a 66 fastback and dont necessarily care about it being a real K code then just buy this one and re-sell it so you got more money to work with. Deals don't come around all that often, take advntage while you can.
