Default Steering question

Hey I've got a lot of play in my steering wheel, what causes that and how do I fix it? I've got power steering and this is in a 70 Mach1
Thanks!

well, the steering box gets worn out apparently.....

in you open the hood, look down on it, theres a screw coming out....a worm screw....loosen the lock nut around it, then tighten it a little and tighten the lock nut.....that should take some play out apparently.....the best is to just get rack and pinion steering though...no play at all........except its a lot of money.

my grandpa said to jack the front up a tad so u can turn the wheel all the way to one side for some reason.....ive never done this before so someone else should confirm it before you try it....i would of tried it but i cant get the stupid lock nut loose with a wrench and dont have a deep enough socket right now....

Your grandpa is a smart man. Yeah, you need to turn the steering wheel all the way to the left before you loosen the nut. Turn the screw in until it rubs, then back off a tad before you tighten the nut. If that doesn't fix the loose steering, then check the idler arm, pitman arm and tie rod ends. If they are loose, then just replace them and have the car realigned.

Thanks for the help! I'll give that a try and see what happens.

I found this to be normal with power steering setups especially, as per the original design. It depends on play to determine which way to pressurize and turn. An old steering box will also contribute, even when converted to the manual setup. That's why I went to R&P after converting to manual from power, been there, done that...

You don't see too many performance Mustangs with power steering, do you. There is is reason for that. The steering is mushy and unreliable. Rack and pinion is the ticket.
