engine swap question
question im planning on putting a 1985 302 in to my 1969 to replace the old 302 thats in it. i was wondering am i gonna have to change my raditor because of flow direction. also can i use my altenator or am i gonna need to buy a new one.
No you don't need to change anything but the harmonic balancer and flexplate/flywheel you will need to use the ones from the 85 302 because that engine has the 50oz balance. just change the water pump out with a 69 pump.
well i think im gonna buy nw altenator just to clean up the engine bay you know i dont wanna have a new shiny engine and then this really nasty lookin water pump and altnetor. so what year water pump and altenator should i buy?
u also need an adapter for the clutch linkage if its going into a manual tranny car! check down a few post if so look for the post about the 92 block!
OIL PAN... you will need the older style oil pan and pick up. Front sump pan is what you are looking for, the one fron the old engine will work. Just swap it before you try to put it in there.
Use the brackets from the old 302 and get an alternator with the highest Amp rating that will fit it. You want the old style alternator 69 era. Your car isnt wired for the new style alternator, but if you want to go that route, you can find info on the swap. I'm sorry, I cant remember what it takes to upgrade. Its been a long time since I did one, almost 20 years..

Get a water pump for a 85 if you're leaving the front of the motor the way it is, and get a alternator for a 69 so you don't have to mess with wiring in case it's different!
