Not sure, but i would definatly replace them with notched ones anyway. You got the new heads, so go for it. From what I've learned you get better compression out of them and if you can get the ones that have the notch and to accomadate the valves and rise up to come almost flush with the valve instead of just laying flat (anyone know what these are called). I plan on using these when I build my motor up.
i think they are called flat-top pistons???
um, flat top pistons are the one's with the flat tops and the grooves.

i'm talking about the other ones, high compression pistons.

to me flat top means just that, the top is flat (stock pistons).

"flat top" would than be grooved top

"high compression" would be just that.

i guess so. i google'd it as high compression pistons and those came up. maybe that was what i was looking for.

he would be using a flat top piston not a domed one.

yeah a domed piston has a raised crown to increase compression. you really dont need them, they are more for 12:1 compression and up. race gas territory not pump gas.

Get some forged flat top pistons, the AFR or TFS heads, and the compression will be near 10:1 which with an aluminum head is just fine. You can use all the stock bottom end parts like the crank, rods, and block, just get them machined.

The reason they say you might need notches in the piston is because the valves arent in the stock location. With a long duration or high lift cam, the valve can contact the piston and bend the valve or the pushrod. If ones does it because of the notches, then probably all of them will. Even a flat top piston has valve reliefs, they just need to be in a slightly different location for some heads.

I'm putting the Edlebrock heads on my 289 which is at the machine shop now. Which ones are they, 1.90 or the 2.02? Most flat top pistons have the machining done for the valve reliefs.. You should be fine with the 1.90 or 2.02's as long as you don't go over a .500 lift.

hey guys i have a question, i've tryed to look around and google stuff, but i was wondering if the original pisonts on a 67 289 are notched pistons or not. My father just ordered edelbrock performer aluminum heads and just found out they only work for notched style pistons?

should i return them? and if i do have to return them, what should i get in terms of best performance?, price not really being to important.

Thanks guys,

Chris
