Default power

Guys, i have been wondering, If i get my 289 heads reworked, put a edelbrock RPM cam, intake, and carb on my stock 289, will it have 250 HP? Im planning on keeping my heads, but all the seals are gone, and it's starting to smoke worse.

I would think youll be a little better then that. If you keep in mind that a hipo 289 had 271 hp with an iron manifold, stock 289 heads with studs and guideplates, and a 4 barrel carb that was rated somewhere in the 400 cfm range, I think youll be ok. They did have 10:1 compression, but you could plane yer heads to get that. Ya the hipos had a different cam, but you can get one the same specs or even more agressive then the stock one, in a much less finnicky hydraulic form from Comp Cams.

250/260hp will be about right. That "271" Hp of the Hipo motor is really only about 200 in todays measurement terms. As above you will have to get that compression up to about 10:1 to take advantage of the RPM cam. When you get your heads done, look at slightly larger valves, and some good smothing of the ports. Make sure you also look after your ekhaust. Some extractors and a good twin will be needed. In the end though, what does it matter what number your engine is putting out? what do you want the car to do? answer this question before making engine component decisions.

yep, I just want to be able to beat some cars!!!! Im not into the drag strips, even though i ought to be. I just like to kid around on the streets. Like when a little tuner wants to run, i want to be able to beat him, which i almost do stock. I also want to beat my friends 93 LX 5.0. That car is alittle faster then mine. He's basically stock except for a cold air intake. We weigh the same, and have close to the same HP. I think it;s because he has a 4 speed tranny. I've ridden in the car, and that trans keeps him in the powerband the whole damn time. HE does 70 at like 2000, and when it kicks up he's still lower then 3000. it's crazy. Do you think i would have a chance of beating a 2003 GT?
