For an old high mileage engine, I'd suggest staying where you are. Under 70K miles, a change to synthetic would be only slightly benificial to gas mileage, and cold startup/winter driving. Really hard to make up the cost difference. Age of the seals and gaskets will also make a difference. Synthetic is known to search and exploit leaky gaskets and seals in it's search for freedom
No, No, No....You have to wait until you break-in the engine and seat the rings before going to Synthetic. Some say as long as 12,000 before switching.
