Hello classic guys, i dont come in here much so i dont really know you guys very well, nut i have some questions. My friend just bought a Auto 67 289, how much HP did they come with stock(LOL thats if all 8 cylinders are firing) his car isent in bad shape at all, just a quarter size piece of rust on the firewall! looks like it has been taken care of, he asked me to help him fix the problems the car does have, he wants to rebuild the engine, should he go .030 with summit rebuild kit? also, he is getting a new holly fuel system.
Where can he find some good cylinder heads for the 289 i cant find any!

Also would this be a good cam for it? he doesnt want it so radical it wont idle but he still wants some lobe to it.

Hello, and welcome to the classic section. His stock 289 will make around 200 HP at the flywheel, but since it is a worn engine, probably some less. There are a myriad of upgrades he can add to that engine to make more horsepower. It all depends on how much money he is willing to spend. Horsepower costs money. For instance, if he doesn't want to spend money on the bottom end, he can get aftermarket heads for around a thousand (Air Flow Research, Edelbrock RPM, etc.) an aluminum intake (Weiand, Edelbrock RPM, etc.) a four barrel carb (Motorcraft 4100 series, Holley, Edelbrock etc. The CFM will depend on what is under the carb) headers (JBA, Hooker, etc.) dual exhaust, etc. It really all depends on how deep his pockets are. A "built" 400 HP crate engine will run him around 5K. Again, it just depends on what the final outcome he wants to achieve, and how deep his pockets are.

OK i know this is going to be another big engine debate but here is my opinion. go on to summit or jegs or even the ford website and buy a 347 stroker crate you will have plenty of options and lots of power...!

If you want 300 to the wheels, You need to have around 350 at the flywheel.
