changing to a 9" is a fairly big step as you will need to change whole rear housing, and will need axles too, most 8" rears use a 28 spline axle while most ' rears use a 31 spline axle, If you are going to make a whole rear change then the lincoln rear is a very good choice since you can then have disc brakes on rear at the same time

I wonder if the pinion flange is at the same location on the 8" vs. 9" housings. If not, the driveshaft may need to be shortened (or lengthened).

i know it will be costly and difficult, but if it needs to be done, it will get done.

You can add the 1957-1985 Ford pickup trucks to that list. After 85 or 86, Ford started using the 8.8.

there is a length difference between 8" and 9" rears, drive shaft length is a problem when changing, and keep in mind that a 8" rear can be used in a 9" housing and a 9" can be put in 8" housing, but the smaller 8" housing has to be cut at the bottom for ring gear clearance and this weakens the rear housing

Any good machine shop can lengthen or shorten a drive shaft in a New York minute and balance it while you have a cup of coffee.....

How long is a New York minute? While any good machine shop can do the cut and balance, it is another cost to consider, in my neck of the woods it is around 100 bucks.

Just rebuild it. There are many that will tell you that an 8 inch is not that good but, that's not true. You can rebuild that so it will take 400hp all day.. That's what I did, new Richmond locker and new 3:55's.... Did a total rebuild, bearings, seals, gears, the works for $700..

ok, so i finally got a new hydraulic jack, i jacked up the car, cleaned the rearend so i could find out what i have. it turns out i have a 8" rear end. i have a 351C engine. this explains the leaking of lube from the rearend. ok, so i need a new rearend, where could i find one? i really dont want to buy brand new, but if i have to i will. any suggestions?
