i would have to agree with your friend about your rear end. you have to relize that these cars are 30+ years old and a lot of them if not most of them have never had there rearends serviced and you know how oil gets after awhile...it starts to break down and not protect like it used to. you dont have anything to worry about as far as drving goes, that humming your hearing is more than likely the pinion gears chattering around, so my suggestion is to rebuild the rear end and put a good syntetic rear end oil in there. i run royal puple with my 3.73 set up and you can definetly feel a bigger diff. with it. While your at it now might be a good time to think about putting lower gears(numerically higher ratio) back there to give you a little more go, you can buy new ring and pinion sets from ford racing and the such, or fing a local shop that already has rebuilt third members already to go. the only time you will need to worry about the rear end locking up is if there is no oil in there at all and in that case...stop driving it now!!! please also remeber to replace the axle seal when you replace that rear end, because they tend to go bad after a while, you will need a puller to get it out, dont use a screwdriver please!!!if you need any help as to how to go about replacing your rear end feel free to ask myself or the rest of the guys in here

No, mine doesn't hum. Give it some words, and she will sing though. It could be lots of things, but probably either a worn tranny or differential. Don't worry about it. Just turn up the radio.

The bearing is inside the axle tube it should have grease on it. I just remember when i was a kid my dad was always having to replace the rear wheel bearings in his big dodges they hummed right before they went out
