Default ignition problem

Hello everybody.I recantly purchesed a 64 and half mustang. It has a 260 with an auto.It also has the crane cams electronic ignition converstion set up .When i drive around for a while and the car warms up, it stalls and it will just crank over but not fire.I checked and thers no spark.I installed a balast resistor between the ignition wire and the coil and it still happens.Anyone know what to do.

You don't nned a ballast resistor with an electronic ignition. 2 questions, was the resistor wire bypassed when they put in the ingnition and do you have voltage at the coil (12vdc) when the thing is not starting?

i called crane cams and they said to install a balast resistor but if i dont need to then i dont know and i dont know really understand the first question and i dont know if theres voltage getting to the coil

I don't know why crane would say that. Generally electronic ignitions don't need a resistor. The reisitor is there to cut the voltage to the points down to about 9vdc so you don't burn up the points. Electroics don't have that problem. Mustangs come from the factory with a resistor wire not a Ballast resistor. They do the same thing. If you still have the reisitor wire and you are running the ballast resistor that is a big problem. You will be cutting down to far on the voltage to the coil.

You can use a test light at the + side of the coil with the key on. A voltage meter would work better that way you can tell how much you are getting. Try that when it will start and when it won't start and compare.

I just looked at the crane system. Their web page says it will operate from 6-18volts. You should not need a resistor. Are you running their coil too? It is possible the coil is over heating and shutting down. do you have the coil mounted to the block? If so you might want to mount it on the side wall of the engine compartment. that will keep it cooler.

Bypass the pink resistor wire and go directly to the blue/black wire on the ignition switch for a constant 12 + volts to the coil when the key is on. Also, double check your battery for a good 12VDC output when the engine is hot. If not, either the battery is toast, or your Voltage Regulator needs replacing. You will need a volt meter to do all these tests, so go get one if you don't have one. Trust me, you will use it a lot in the future, so get a good one.
